Project Overview:
As a local architect based in Kottayam, nestled near the serene
shores of Vembanad Lake, I was approached by a Mumbai-based
client seeking to implement a design prepared by another Mumbai
architecture firm. Upon reviewing the proposal, it became
apparent that the concept lacked the necessary adaptation for
the unique setting of Vembanad Lake, hence I recognized the need
for an alternative design tailored to our local context.
The site occupies a narrow 3.5-acre strip of land measuring 59 meters by 230 meters, flanked by the road to the east and Vembanad Lake to the west, both on the narrow sides. The primary objective was to ensure that every room, cottage, and amenity offered breathtaking views of the lake. To achieve this, I proposed a design centered around a sprawling infinity pool stretching from the western end, effectively dividing the property into two halves. Cottages were strategically positioned on either side of the pool, oriented at different angles to maximize views of both the lake and the pool from every vantage point.
The interior theme is of white and wood. Its a combination of white and brown(wood) which brings elegance to this house while the furniture are all designed in-house and carefully fabricated in workshop. None other colours are used for this house other than the blue water-body in the middle, which has kept things simple. Unlike the conventional way curtains are avoided mostly and blinds which matches with the theme are provided for the long windows and openings. The long windows inside the house could be slid opened and pivoted. Another focus element for this house is the terrace garden on roof which helps to reduce the heat in the house and at the same time grow vegetables on top. Solar panels are provided on the terrace which provides energy to carry out the day to day needs of the house inmates.
Emphasizing a harmonious blend with nature, the design minimized the presence of walls, particularly in communal areas like the reception, lounge, and coffee shop, fostering an open and inviting atmosphere where guests could fully immerse themselves in the natural surroundings. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by the captivating sight of the lake against the horizon, with the architecture subtly enhancing rather than overpowering the scenic backdrop.
